Wildcats in 9th Place after First Round in California

PALO ALTO, Calif. ?- The Arizona women’s golf team is in 9th place after the first round at the Stanford-Pepsi Women’s Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. 


“Overall, we are right in the middle, we broke 300 for the first time this season,” head coach Greg Allen said.  “We’ve got a team that can compete, we just need to put together 18 wholes of golf, today we played well through about 15.”


The Wildcats shot a single round season best +14 (298) today and currently stand in 9th out of the 19 team field.  Arizona is only three strokes off the 5th place team, Pepperdine +11 (295). 


Arizona freshman Lauren Espinosa led the Cats in round one with a +1 (72).  Espinosa sits in a tie for 10th place but is only 4 strokes back from the leader, Irene Cho -3 (68). 


Wildcat senior Cassandra Kirkland played well in round one.  Kirkland shot a +2 (73) and is tied for 18th place.  Freshman Amanda Wilson shot a +5 (76) and is tied for 45th place.   


Despite a few struggles on the putting green, Lani Elston-Marshall shot a +6 (77) and is tied for 52nd place.  “Lani spent some time working on the green after the round,” Allen said.  “I think she’ll come out tomorrow and have a better day.” 


Rounding out the Wildcats squad is Sommer Scholl who shot a +18 (89). 


The Wildcats will tee of tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. for the beginning of round two.
