TUCSON - The Arizona Wildcats and the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks will continue the 2010-11 slate with a contest in Tucson's McKale Center on Mon., Nov. 15. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
All Wildcat games can be heard live on KTUC AM 1400. All broadcasts will start 15 minutes prior to tip-off for the pre-game show. Entering their third season calling Arizona Wildcat women's basketball games will be Derrick Palmer (play-by-play) and Alysiah Bond (color). The Arizona Wildcats and the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks will meet for the 35th time on Monday night. The two teams met for the first time during the 1972-73 season when the Wildcats topped the Lumberjacks, 36-30. The last meeting came during the 2007-08 season when the Wildcats beat the `Jacks, 75-54. Northern Arizona last beat Arizona, 74-64, during the 1988-89 season.
In the first official game of the 2010-11 season, the Wildcats topped the hosting Wichita State Shockers, 81-72, in overtime, at Wichita's Koch Arena. Arizona overcame two different 16-point deficits. Junior Shanita Arnold, freshman Erica Barnes and sophomore Davellyn Whyte led the Arizona scorers with 16 points each. Junior Brooke Jackson also chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds. Defensively, Barnes brought down 14 boards for the Wildcats, including 10 defensively, for her first career double-double. Freshman Candice Warthen also made her Wildcat debut, picking up four points, three rebounds and one assist.
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks were picked seventh in the preseason coaches' and media polls released by the Big Sky Conference. A year ago, NAU produced the league's Big Sky Freshman of the Year, Patton, and Newcomer of the Year, Vickie Toney. Both return this season along with seven other letterwinners and the No. 53 ranked recruiting class in the country produced by ESPN HoopGurlz.
In a preseason exhibition, NAU beat Western New Mexico, 83-52. The Lumberjacks then opened the regular season on the road at Arizona State on Friday. The `Jacks fell to the Sun Devils, 81-46, in Phoenix.
