TUCSON--Southern Mississippi used a 14-hit attack to slip past Long Beach State, 5-2, and even its record at 7-7, in Friday afternoon play in Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.

Southern Miss got on the scoreboard in the first at-bat as Amanda Brown homered to left. The number two hitter, Melanie Hymel doubled to left-center and two outs later Heather Bell doubled to make it 2-0.

Long Beach State (15-7) used doubles by Natalie Walker and Arleigh Thorp to score a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Golden Eagles came right back with a home run by Melanie Hymel to make it 3-1.

Natalie Walker singled in a run for LBSU in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2, but Heather Bell's leadoff home run for Southern Miss to straightaway center pushed the lead back to two, 4-2, in the sixth. The Eagles added another run when Kenya Peters followed an Amanda Brown double with a run-scoring single.
