WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The No. 15 Arizona volleyball team won its fourth straight match this evening, sweeping American (30-22, 30-24, 30-23) in its first match of the American Classic. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 6-2 on the year.
"It was nice that we were able to execute consistently with another group of players in different positions," Head Coach David Rubio said. "I think that shows what kind of players we have and their aptitude with regards to the game. We had to play well in order to win."
Arizona combined for a .311 hitting percentage and held the Eagles to just .088. The Cats also out-blocked American 14-2.
Junior Jennifer Abernathy led the Wildcats, finishing with 15 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Junior Bre Ladd added seven kills and eight digs, while freshman Dominique Lamb and senior Jolene Killough each had six blocks on the match. Sophomore Kristina Baum notched seven kills on 10 attempts with no errors for a .700 hitting percentage. She also added four blocks, two assists and two service aces. Setter Stephanie Butkus finished with 31 assists, five kills, five digs, four blocks and an ace.
