TUCSON, Ariz. (April 15) - The University of Arizona women's basketball program has completed its 2002 recruiting class with the signing of Anna Chappell (Qualicum Beach, B.C./Kwalikum Secondary) to a National Letter of Intent, announced head coach Joan Bonvicini on Monday. A 6-1 forward, Chappell (pronounced like chapel) will join the Wildcats for the 2002-03 season.

A three-time Island All-Star, Chappell was also named a Provincial All-Star, a York House Tournament First Team All-Star and a Nanaimo Invitational All-Star in 2002. Chappell put up some big numbers this season, averaging 28.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.8 blocks per game. During the 2001 season, Chappell was named Most Inspirational Athlete of the Year and was her team's co-MVP after leading Kwalikum in scoring. She was the Island Most Valuable Player in both 1999 and 2000.

"Anna is a strong, versatile 3-4 player who put up some huge numbers in high school. She's a good athlete who can hit the high-post jumper and score on the block," said head coach Joan Bonvicini, who will be entering her 12th season at the helm of the Wildcat program next fall. "It's been one of Anna's dreams to play in the States, so I think she'll be a great addition to our program.

"We've signed one of the best classes we've ever had here at Arizona. We have two Parade All-Americans in Shawntinice Polk and Natalie Jones, and we have players that will strengthen our team at every position. We want to get back into the NCAA tournament and to contend for a Pac-10 title. Our staff did a great job, as did our current players, in securing this recruiting class."

Chappell is only the second Canadian ever signed by Bonvicini at Arizona and will be the first to grace a Wildcat roster since Ontario product Andrea Constand graduated in 1996. She is one of six signees who comprise Arizona's 2002-03 recruiting class.
