Three Wildcats Advance to Round of 32

IRVINE, Calif. - The University of Arizona men's tennis team wrapped up day one of the ITA West Regional Championships after play was delayed in the morning due to inclement weather on the UCI campus. Doubles action was canceled and will begin Friday at 8:30 a.m.


Eight Wildcats competed in singles action. Senior Borja Malo clinched two wins to advance to the round of 32, along with senior Andres Carrasco and junior Jason Zafiros who both notched wins to advance.


"Overall I am happy with the way the team played today," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "I was especially proud of Borja for the way he competed coming off his injury."


Malo led the Wildcats early topping Michael Grant of USC in three sets. After falling in the first set 0-6, the senior bounced back in the second and third set 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the round of 64.  In second round action, Malo defeated Alex Brigham of UCLA 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Tomorrow Malo will take on No. 3 singles seed Chris Kearney of UC Irvine at 12 p.m.


Redshirt junior David Humphreys fell in his opening match in the round of 64 to USC's No. 17 singles seed JT Sundling in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.


Tom Wolff took care of business in his first round match against UC Riverside's Kevin Griffin. The redshirt sophomore won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. In the round of 64, Wolff dropped straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to the University of San Diego's No. 14 singles seed Patrick Pohlmann.


Senior Geoff Embry topped Jared Spiker of Hawaii after falling in the first set 6-7, the senior bounced back to clinch the next two sets 6-0, 6-3. In his second match of the day, Embry fell to No. 17 singles seed Steven Henderson of UC Irvine 6-1, 6-2.


Freshman Mario Urquidi also came out victorious in his first match of the day downing USC's Goel Giger in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to advance.  In the round of 64, Urquidi dropped his match to No. 16 singles seed Alex Llompart of Pepperdine 6-1, 6-0.


No. 17 singles seed Jay Goldman suffered a second-round loss to UCLA's Max Ta Ba Truong in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Goldman received a bye in the first round.


Zafiros who received a No. 12 singles seed received a bye in the first round and faced Pepperdine's Alex Moreno in the round of 64. Zafiros took care of business in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the round of 32. Tomorrow the junior will face Pepperdine's Mousheg Hovhannisyan at 12 p.m.


After earning a first round bye, Carrasco topped San Diego State's Tim Shultz van Endert in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 to advance to the round of 32. The senior will take on UCLA's No. 8 singles seed Amit Inbar tomorrow at 2 p.m.


The Wildcats will begin action tomorrow in doubles competition beginning at 8:30 a.m.


The doubles team of Zafiros and Humphreys will take on Brian Mcphee and Alexander Sonesson of Cal Poly in the first round of 64 and the Wildcat duo of Urquidi and Wolff will face Cal Poly's duo of Drew Jacobs and Jordan Keplar. The Wildcat pair of Carrasco and Embry received a No. 9 seed in the draw earning a bye in the first round. The pair will face Jon Kazarian and Stephen Stege of UCI in the round of 32.
