TUCSON, Ariz.- In what is considered to be one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, Arizona head volleyball coach David Rubio announced today the signing of four heralded high school players for the 2002 freshman class. Kim Glass (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley High School), Bre Ladd (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro High School), Jennifer Abernathy (Deer Valley, Calif./Deer Valley High School) and Meghan Cumpston (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff Union High School) all made their intentions known by signing a national letter of intent to play for the Wildcats on Wednesday. Glass, Abernathy and Ladd all played together on the U.S. Junior National Team this past summer.

"We're very excited about the level of recruits in the 2002 class," said Rubio. "The coaching staff feels this group of players can keep us at the current level that we're playing at now and has the potential to take us one step higher."

Glass and Ladd, who also played together on the 2000 Youth National Team, headline the top recruiting class in school history.

Glass, a 6-3 middle block/outside hitter, has garnered interest from every major volleyball power in the country. A high school All-American out of Lancaster, Pa., she also started as an outside hitter for the U.S. Junior National team that participated in the Wold Championships in the Dominican Republic this past summer. She is a three-time letter winner at Conestoga Valley High School in Lancaster and has twice been named all-state, all-district and all-league (1998, '99) and is expected to earn a third selection to all three honors after the 2001 season. She was also named the Section II MVP in 2000. Glass led Conestoga to the District III Championship this season. She is the daughter of Kathy Storms and Sherman Glass.

Ladd, who also had a number of scholarship offers to chose from, started on the right side on the 2001 U.S. Junior National team. A 6-1 middle blocker/right side hitter, she recently garnered Southern 5A Player-of-the-Year honors and the Arizona Republic named her its Arizona Player-of-the-Year as well. A three-year letterwinner and the 2001 co-MVP of Canyon Del Oro High School, Ladd led the Dorados to the quarterfinals of the Arizona State Championships. At CDO she set five school records, including kills in a match, season and career. She also finished atop the career lists at CDO in total blocks and service aces. Ladd, a native of Tucson, is the daughter of Tammie and Bob Ladd.

Abernathy, a 5-10 outside hitter, comes to the Old Pueblo as a top recruit from Deer Valley, Calif., where her team is still competing in the postseason state championships. A four-year starter for the varsity team, she was named the Female Athlete-of-the-Year and the Volleyball Player-of-the-Year by the Contra Costa Times for the 2000-2001 school season. She has been named MVP and first-team all league in the Bay Valley Athletic League for 2001. Abernathy leads her team in kills and digs in 2001 while hitting .525 for the season. She is also second on the team in service aces. Her club team, Delta Valley, won the Davis Volleyball Festival this past summer and finished third at Junior Nationals where she was named to the all-tournament team. Jennifer is the daughter of Sherman and Theresa Abernathy.

Cumpston, a 6-1 outside hitter, was also heavily recruited out of Red Bluff, Calif. A three-year starter for Red Bluff Union High School, she is a two-time (2000, '01) all-league and all-section honoree. She recently broke the school record in kills, is hitting .610 on the year and has 256 digs for the season. Red Bluff Union is still competing in the postseason state championships. She also was the co-captain for her basketball team for the 2000-2001 season. Meghan is the daughter of Cindy and Terry Cumpston.
