TUCSON - A big crowd of spectators waited patiently outside Rita Hillenbrand Stadium Friday afternoon for the magic hour of 4:30, when the facility opened for the exhibition game pitting the top-ranked Wildcats against the world's finest, the U.S. Olympic team headed by Arizona coach Mike Candrea.
Former UA All-American and 2001 Honda Softball Award winner Jennie Finch is expected to throw against the Wildcats, while acting UA head coach Larry Ray likely will go with sophomore ace Alicia Hollowell, at least for several innings.
Facing juggernaut Team USA is a daunting task for any pitcher. The U.S. team is 23-0 and has pounded opponents by sizeable margins throughout its "Aiming for Athens" tour of top college programs this spring.
UA had only a handful of standing-room-only tickets to distribute before the game, and officials anticipate a capacity crowd in excess of 2,500.
