TUCSON - Senior Andres Carrasco and junior Jason Zafiros are set to finish the Wildcats' fall season this weekend in Sarasota, Fla., at the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic at The Athletic Center at Lakewood Ranch on Nov. 12-14.
"This is a new event in college tennis and some of the top teams in the nation will be competing," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "This is our last fall tournament and we look to finish strong."
The event will feature the likes of 13 top teams: Notre Dame, Pepperdine University, University of Miami, Baylor University, Ole Miss, University of Florida, University of Minnesota, Oklahoma State, University of Alabama, Tulane University, Florida Gulf Coast, Troy State and Mississippi State.
This three-day classic marks the fourth fall tournament for Zafiros who returns to his home state of Florida, 20 minutes from his hometown of Bradenton. The junior is ranked 107 in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings and has compiled a 4-3 singles record this fall, including his most notable event, the NMSU Invitational where he claimed the singles back draw title.
Carrasco, the native from Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain is slated to compete in his third fall tournament. The senior competed in the ITA-All American event and the ITA West Regional tallying a 1-3 singles record.
The two will also team up in doubles competition for the first time, Friday in the first round of competition beginning at 9 a.m. EST.
The first round of single's action will begin at 10:30 a.m. EST with the second round to follow at 2:30 a.m. EST.
