LONG BEACH, Calif. - Opening the 2011 men's swimming Pac-10 Championships at the Belmont Olympic Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif., No. 6 Arizona finished fourth overall in the 800 freestyle relay, but was disqualified in its 200 medley relay.
In the medley relay, the team of Mitchell Friedemann, Kelley Wyman, Craig Jordens and Adam Small posted a would-be solid second-place time of 1:25.16, but it was for naught as Small, the anchor leg, was early on his take off by .08. Had the DQ not occurred, Arizona was in place for second behind California's nation-leading time of 1:23.92.
Friedemann's opening backstroke split of 21.75 led to UA's potentially quick cut time but Small appeared to have left with the lane to his left, resulting in the early departure.
After regrouping, the Wildcat 800 free relay of Matt Barber, Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or, Cory Chitwood and A.J. Tipton placed fourth with a time of 6:24.23. Of importance, Barber's opening split of 1:35.74 likely sealed his bid for entry to NCAA's.
After the two events, Arizona did a time trial of its 200 medley relay with the same foursome, but couldn't match the adrenaline of the championship heat and finished with a time of 1:26.10.
Tomorrow's events include the 500 free, 200 I.M., 50 free and 200 free relay. Prelims with begin at 11 a.m. with finals at 6 p.m.
