TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 1 Arizona Softball team took to the road Wednesday, defeating Arizona State in Tempe, 4-2. The Wildcats improved to 42-4 on the season, and 11-1 in the Pac-10.
Arizona got on the scoreboard early when sophomore Courtney Fossatti scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Mackenzie Vandergeest in the top of the first. The Sundevils evened the score in the first inning with a run by center fielder Kristin Farber.
Arizona scored again in the top of the third inning, when Vandergeest singled to right field, scoring Fossatti.
ASU tied the game again in the fourth inning, when third baseman Phelan Wright hit a home run.
In the seventh inning, Fossatti reached base on a fielder's choice, and senior Lovie Jung was intentionally walked for the fourth time in the game. Vandergeest drove in two more runs with a double to center field, securing a victory for the Cats.
Freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and improving to 28-3.
Arizona will hit the road again to play Oregon on Friday, April 25, at 2 p.m.
