TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona women’s tennis will send seniors Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, beginning Nov. 4. Three other Wildcats, junior Stephanie Balzert, sophomore Kasia Jakowlew and freshman Camelia Todorova, will head to Palm Springs, Calif., for the Fall Desert Classic.
Hollands, ranked No. 7 in the ITA poll, will play in the singles bracket as one of eight seeded players. She has posted a 6-3 record thus far in the fall in two tournaments. Hollands had a four-match win streak snapped when she was upset in the opening round of play at the LA Riviera All-American Championships.
Mlakar, who will not compete in singles play, will join Hollands in the doubles bracket. Despite being ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, the pair has lost in the quarterfinals of two recent tournaments, brining the pair to a 2-2 record. Hollands and Mlakar will play as the fourth seed in the tournament with Notre Dame’s sophomore twins Catrina and Christian Thompson, who handed them their most recent loss, as the second seed.
Arizona’s Head Coach Vicky Maes finished as the runner-up in the Indoor Championships back in 1996 to Kansas’ Kylie Hunt 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Balzert, who leads the Wildcats in wins with her 7-3 record, will participate in both singles and doubles play. Balzert will be joined on the doubles court with Todorova for the first time in either of their collegiate careers. This will be Jakowlew’s first tournament of the year, she is coming off a freshman year in which she posted a 1-8 singles record.
