HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA. (Sept. 16, 2000) -- The Arizona Wildcats women's golf team shot an even 300, but came up short to the Duke Blue Devils at the weather-shortened NCAA Fall Preview at the Mission Inn's El Campeon course. Arizona finished in second place, just three shots behind tournament champion Duke.
Earlier in the day, play was halted for nearly three hours as heavy rains pounded the area. Tournament officials decided to cancel the final round due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gordon, which is expected to dump up to seven inches of rain in Lake County, Fla. on Sunday. Play finished Saturday in a driving rain storm.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was junior Cristina Baena. She finished third with a 147 for the tournament, just one stroke behind Maria Prieto and Marta Beautell, both of Wake Forest. Baena bogeyed her final two holes for a 76 on the day.
Last year, Arizona finished second at the NCAA Preview at Crosswater, Ore., and then returned to Crosswater in May and captured the national title.
Arizona's tournament winning streak is stopped at eight. The Wildcats return to action next week at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
