Senior Swimmers Named to All-District VIII At-Large Team

Tucson, Ariz. ?- Arizona senior swimmers Emily Mason and Byron Jeffers have been named to the All-District VIII At-Large Team for their excellence in academics and athletics.

           

Mason, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., accumulated a 3.347 GPA during her four years at Arizona, majoring in journalism. She helped her team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships as she defended her title as the NCAA champion in the 500-yard freestyle.

 

Mason was the Pac-10 champion in 500 freestyle and swam the first leg of third-place 800-free relay. She also finished third in the 400 IM and third in the 200-butterfly.

 

Mason was named the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month for December and was the recipient of the Ruby and Sapphire Award (top female student-athlete). She is a 16-time All-American and a two-time honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10.

 

            Jeffers is an accounting major from Durban, South Africa, that achieved a 3.765 GPA while at Arizona.

 

In 2004, Jeffers was a first team All-American in the 200 free relay that was second nationally. He was also named to the 2004 All-Pac-10 Academic first team.

 

Jeffers is a two-time recipient of the Mary Roby Academic Achievement Award as he was honored in 2002 and 2003.

 

            The two swimmers were amongst 21 athletes from 10 schools that made he team. They now advance to the national team ballot, the results of which will be announced on June 14 for the men and June 16 for the women.
