NCAA Region 1 Softball - Sunday, May 23 - Tucson

Oklahoma gave Louisiana-Lafayette a beating not unlike the one it had just endured at the hands of the Ragin' Cajuns, but OU's gave it the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championship and a berth in the Women's College World Series this week.

And OU pitcher Kami Keiter shut the often potent Cajuns' hitting attack down, limiting UL to four hits in a shutout effort.

The Sooners (44-20-1) came out swinging in the first, putting six runs on the board keyed by as many hits including a two-run single by Christina Enea, a run-scoring hit by Mariee Mena and a three-run double by Keiter. The Sooners chased UL starter Brooke Mitchell, who was pitching in her sixth game in two days.

The Sooners batted around again in the second innings, this time plating five runs on four hits, with another RBI from Enea, two more from Mena and an RBI from April Valdez. Louisiana-Lafayatte coach Stefni Lotief pulled reliever Holly Tankersley in the first of a couple switches back and forth by she and Mitchell, trying to do something to quell the OU onslaught.

OU started out double, fly ball, double, home run in the third by Kristin Vesely, Heather Scaglione, Enea and Jessica Leslie, to underscore what the outcome would be. OU took a 14-0 lead into the bottom of the third. Vesely picked up another RBI single in the fourth to give the Sooners a 15-0 lead.

Game 14

Louisiana-Lafayette forced a Game 15 in the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships with a hot attack that blistered Oklahoma's pitching for 18 hits and seized some momentum from the Sooners, 12-4.

The winner of the "if necessary" game, made necessary by UL giving OU its first loss in regional play, will earn the Region I Championship and a trip to Oklahoma City for next week's Women's College World Series.

The Ragin' Cajuns won their 60th game against seven deafeats, extending the school record for victories. OU dropped to 43-20-1. The Cajuns' were the region's fifth seed and dispatched No. 1 Arizona yesterday, then made it seem easy against the fourth-seeded Sooners.

The Cajuns took the lead in the second inning. Ashley Evans doubled to center, then later advanced to third on an error, and scored on a RBI single by Crystal George.

Louisiana extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth with a two-run double by Joy Webre to cap a five-hit inning.

Back-to-back doubles by OU's Jessica Leslie and Jamie Fox gave the Sooners their first run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1.

Oklahoma rallied in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. With one out Norrelle Dickson was hit by a pitch and Kristin Vesely doubled down the left field line to put both runners in scoring position.

Heather Scaglione hit a grounder to third, but Dickson beat the throw to the plate and Scaglione was awarded second base because of interference by first baseman Evans. Christina Enea beat out a throw for a single and the runners held to load the bases. Jessica Leslie was hit by a pitch for an RBI and Fox hit a run-scoring single to give OU a 4-3 lead.

The Cajuns answered with four runs to regain the lead in the top of the sixth. Evans drew a walk, Lacey Bertucci singled and George singled to left, driving in Evans. Pinch-runner Michelle Bergeaux scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4, then Holly Tankersley singled in one run and a second scored when the rightfielder bobbled the ball, making it 7-4.

Brittany Bryant slugged a leadoff home run to left to lead off the OU seventh and make it 8-4. OU coach Patti Gasso pulled Kami Keither and brought in Jessica Johnson to finish the game. Joy Webre doubled in another run, and Tiffany Hebert added a three-run double to make it 12-4.
