What’s Up:

This week the Arizona heads to Corvallis, Ore. To take on the No. 7 Oregon State Beavers. Last year against OSU, the Gymcats scored their highest team total of the season with a 195.250. The Wildcats hope to continue this streak of high scores against the Beavers this weekend. Oregon State will be broadcasting this meet live on osubeavers.com.

Last Week:

Arizona hosted its annual Flip for the Fight meet in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Gymcats entertained a packed house for the second week in a row, competing in front of 1,170 people.

Despite a few hiccups in the first rotation, the Gymcats ended the second half of the meet on a high note, earning a 48.575 on the balance beam and a season high team total of 49.025 on the floor.

Highlights from the meet included Sophomore Deanna Graham’s return to form after several weeks of illness, Sophomore Britnie Jones’ bar set, and Senior Sarah Tomczyk’s outstanding floor routine.

“Sarah’s routine was by far her best of the season. It was really great to see her come out and perform like that.” Head Coach Bill Ryden said, “It was a good ending to the meet.”

Back in Action:

The Gymcats look forward to welcoming back Sophomore Katie Matusik into this week’s lineup. Matusik has been out this season due to injury, and will be performing for the first time this year on bars and beam against OSU.

Scouting the Opposition:

No. 7 Oregon State is currently ranked No. 2 in the Pac-10 and will be a challenging opponent for the U of A. Last week the Beavers earned a record of 8-0 with their defeat of California. To contribute to this win was Junior Becky Colvin, who earned the title of Pac-10 Special Performance of the week for scoring a 9.925 on vault.

What’s Coming Up:

The Gymcats head to Tuscaloosa, to compete against the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide. The meet will take place Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. MST.

2009 Review:

The Wildcats completed the 2009 season with an overall record of 12-12 and were able to make their 23rd consecutive NCAA post-season appearance. Thanks to a pristine floor exercise performance, then Junior Sarah Tomcyzk was able to take it one step further and competed floor at the NCAA National Championships. In addition, three Gymcats earned All-Conference accolades, including freshman Deanna Graham (2nd Team Vault), freshman Rebecca Cardenas (2nd Team Floor), and redshirt junior Sarah Tomczyk (1st Team Floor).

Look Out for New Gymcats:

Arizona bolsters a fairly young team, including four fresh new faces. These include: Aubree Cristello from Glenville, NY, Mykle Douglas from Plano, TX, Ellen Pitluck from Chicago, IL, and Molly Quirk from Glenmont, NY.

Pre-season Rankings:

The Arizona Gymcats head into the season ranked No. 20 in the 2010 Women’s Pre-Season Coaches poll. They are one of only five Pac-10 schools to be rated. The others include No. 4 UCLA, No. 7 Stanford, No 10 Oregon State, and No. 25 Washington. Arizona State was listed as another team receiving votes for consideration.

Stacked Schedule:

Arizona faces an extremely stacked schedule this season, competing against nine schools ranked in the pre-season poll. This includes some tough meets early on, including opening the season against No. 8 Arkansas, then No. 7 Stanford immediately after. The Gymcats must also take on No. 5 UCLA, No. 10 Oregon State, No. 3 Alabama, No. 15 Nebraska, No. 21 West Virginia, No. 22 Minnesota, and No. 25 Washington.

Ryden’s Record:

Head Coach Bill Ryden earned his 150th win last season, totaling his career and school record to become 152-154-3 after Friday’s meet against UCLA.

Pac-10 Championships in the Desert:

Arizona will have the honor of hosting the Pac-10 Championships on March 27 at 4 p.m. The last time the Wildcats hosted the championships was in 2004. Tickets are available for purchase through the McKale Center Ticket Office.
