TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 26 Arizona men’s tennis team (2-0) opened their home schedule of the 2005 dual match season by defeating Northern Arizona (0-1), without head coach Bill Wright, 5-2, Saturday, Jan. 16. The Wildcats took one of the doubles matches, and they won five of the singles matches.

In the doubles matches, first to finish and playing on court three, were freshman Mitchell Brown and Francois Vandermerwe. The duo fell to Brian Grooms and Jermy Coll, 8-4. Clinching the doubles point for NAU, on court two, junior Tim Mullane and sophomore Jason Labrosse lost to Jonas Jegers and Jamie Maxwell, 8-4. Competing in the No. 1 position, senior Paul Warkentin and freshman Bruno Alcala, in a back and forth match, beat Thibault Schram and Henrik Lilja, 8-6.

“With the No. 1 and 2 (Roger Matalonga and Colin O'Grady) out for us, along with our No. 3 (Daniel Andrus, recovering from an injury), we tried some new combinations today and all the players battled hard,” said Coach Tad Berkowitz.

Competing for Arizona on court three, Labrosse was the first Wildcat to finish as he cruised past Maxwell, 6-1, 6-1. Mullane finished shortly after on court four, defeating Lilja, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Nathan Cochrane continued the win streak for the Wildcats, by defeating Albert Jansma, 6-3, 6-4. Following up Cochrane, Vandermerwe clinched the winning point for the Wildcats, defeating Jegers, 6-4, 6-2. On court one, in the toughest match of the day, Alcala defeated Coll, 7-6 (3), 6-2. To finish out the day, Warkentin fell to Schram, in another tough battle, 6-3, 7-5.

“Today was great experience for our freshman today. They were thrown into a tough spot with our top players being gone, and our players really stepped it up,” said Berkowitz.

In other action, with coach Bill Wright along side, senior Colin O'Grady and No. 58 Roger Matalonga finished up competition and the National Colligate Tennis Classic, in Palm Springs, Calif. Matalonga, in the finals of the classic, fell to No. 13 Pedro Rico, of Pepperdine University, 4-6, 7-5, 2-6. In the doubles championship, O’Grady and Matalonga fell to Treat Huey and Somdev Devvarman, of Virginia, 8-2.
