Oriol’s 70 is UA’s low round of the day

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team shot a seven-over-par 287 Thursday and stands in 25th place at the 2007 NCAA Championships at Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va.

Arizona’s seven-over day gave the team two round total of 577 (+17) and possession of 25th place in the 30-team field.  UA’s effort was a three-stroke improvement over its first round effort, but did little to help the team’s standing as the Cats slipped one spot on the leaderboard.  Stanford continues to lead the field with a seven-under total of 553.  The Cardinal are one stroke ahead of Minnesota (558), while Coastal Carolina (558), East Tennessee State (560) and Charlotte (562) rounded out the top three places.

The Wildcats were led in the second round by freshman Pedro Oriol, who carded an even-par 70.  His two-round total of 143 (+3) places him in a tie for 58th place.  Through 36 holes, the Wildcats have yet to post a round under par.  Minnesota’s Bronson LaCassie holds individual lead with a eight-under 132.

Senior Nathan Tyler is tied for 76th place at four-over 144.  The Tucson, Ariz., product shot a four-over 74 in the second round.  Senior Josh Esler carded a two-over 72 and moved into a tie for 102nd place at 146 (+6).

Senior Josh Wilks posted a four-over 74 in the second round and is tied for 115th place at 147 (+7), while senior Brian Prouty is tied for 120th place at eight-over 148.  Prouty carded a one-over 71 on Thursday, which was Arizona’s second-lowest round of the day.

The 72-hole NCAA Championships continue through Saturday at Golden Horseshoe Golf Course’s Gold Course, a par 70, 6,803-yard layout.  Arizona is making its 21st consecutive appearance in the national championship event, which is the second-longest active streak in the nation.
