TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona State ended a five match skid to rival Arizona in volleyball Friday night with a hard fought victory in Tempe. The Sun Devils upset the 12th-ranked Wildcats in a sweep. Game scores were 33-31, 30-26, 42-40. The loss dropped Arizona's record to 6-5 for the season and 1-2 in conference play. ASU improved to 6-2 with the win and 2-1 in the Pac-10.
The two teams, nearly equal statistically heading into the match, posted similar numbers on Friday. Arizona State out-hit the Wildcats .215 to .194, while Arizona edged the Sun Devils in both digs, 53 to 48, and blocks, 11 to 10. The match featured 38 tie scores and 20 lead changes. The extended third game had 24 ties scores alone.
Individually, freshman Kim Glass led the Wildcats with 15 kills and 12 digs in the match. It is the seventh contest this year that Glass has either led or shared the team lead in kills. Classmate Bre Ladd was the only other Wildcat to figure in double-digit kills against the Sun Devils. Ladd posted 10 kills and a team-high four block assists in the loss. Senior setter Laurie Gardner posted a double-double for the Wildcats with 42 assists and 10 digs.
Arizona State's Juliana Escobar led all players with 20 kills on .293 hitting. She also chipped in with a match-high 16 digs and three service aces.
The match with the Sun Devils was the only contest for the Wildcats this weekend. Arizona remains on the road next week with a trip to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of matches against 18th-ranked Washington State on Thursday and Washington on Friday.
