Arizona Men?s Tennis Breeze Past New Mexico State

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 26 Arizona men’s tennis team (5-1) defeated New Mexico State today, Feb. 6. The Wildcats defeated the Aggie men, fairly easily today, taking two of the three doubles matches, and also taking five of the six singles matches, to win 6-1.


“Today was a very good effort by our boys today. This weekend they came out and played really well with a great amount of confidence and composure. You couldn’t have asked for anything more,” said head coach, Bill Wright.


To begin action on the day, despite a half hour rain delay about 20 minutes into the match, in the No. 3 position, Arizona didn’t waste much time to start the afternoon off right. Junior Tim Mullane and freshman Bruno Alcala defeated Christian Halligan and Jeff Pfeifer, 8-1. Following up on that, the No. 18 pair of senior Roger Matalonga and junior Colin O'Grady, defeated Danilo Zivanovic and Luis Avila, 8-3, clinching the doubles point for the Wildcats. Finishing up in doubles action, senior Paul Warkentin and freshman Claudio Christen, lost a tough and close match, to J. Williams and Stjepan Beq, 9-7


Competing in singles action, rebounding from a couple tough loses, Christen, in one of the quickest matches of the day, defeated Peifer, defeating him, 6-1, 6-3. Following up on another quick match, Warkentin defeated Avila, 6-1, 6-1. In his first singles match this spring season, after coming off a major ankle injury, junior Daniel Andrus clinched the Wildcat victory today defeating J. Williams, 6-4, 6-2. Continuing on his strong spring season, freshman Jason Labrosse defeated Halligan, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 5 position, Alcala lost another tough match to Beq, 6-4, 6-4. To finish the day, no more then five minutes before the rain started up again, Matalonga, in a come from behind victory, defeated Zivanovic, 6-7 (7-3), 6-2, (10-5).


“This weekend was great experience for our players. We were able to get in some good competitive matches this weekend as we are set to start the Pac-10 season next weekend,” said assistant coach, Tad Berkowitz.


The Wildcats will head on the road next weekend, Friday, Feb. 11, against Stanford with first serve around 1:30 p.m. To finish up the weekend, the Wildcats are set to face California Saturday, Feb. 12. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
