Five Arizona Gymnasts Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

Walnut Creek, Calif.  ?- Arizona senior Katie Johnson has been named to the Pacific-10 Conference Gymnastics All-Academic Second Team, the conference office announced Thursday. Johnson is joined by classmates Stevie Fanning and Jamie Schell as well as sophomore teammates Aubrey Taylor and Jamie Holton who also received honorable mention accolades.

 

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.

 

Johnson, a marketing major, earns the highest recognition of her career. She has earned honorable mention accolades the previous two seasons. On the year, Johnson has tallied seven vault and seven floor titles and has finished in the top-five on the vault, beam and floor 31 times. She was named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week for the second time in her career for the week of Mar. 7-13.

 

Schell, a physiology major, receives honorable mention recognition for the third straight year. She has earned 15 top-five finishes this year, including one vault title and two bars titles. She also competed in two all-around competitions, with her season-best score of 39.075 in a victory over Stanford on Feb. 11.

 

Taylor and Holton earn honorable mention honors for the first time in their careers. Holton, a health education major, has competed in all 12 meets this season and set career-highs of 9.675 on the vault and 9.800 on the floor. Taylor, a pre-business major, has earned 10 top-five finishes on the season, including five bars titles and one beam title.

 

The No. 18 Wildcats will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to compete at the NCAA South Central Regional Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, April. 9.
