TUCSON, Ariz.- Head coach David Rubio's blue team handed a 3-1 loss to assoicate head coach Charita Johnson's white team in volleyball's season opening exhibition match on Saturday. An estimated crowd of 550 fans were on hand in McKale Center to watch the Wildcats for the first time in 2002.
Senior Shannon Torregrosa, who played for both teams on Saturday, opened the season on a strong note with a match-high 25 kills on 49 attempts. She belted home 20 kills on .457 hitting in three games for the victorious blue squad and added five more in one game for the white team.
Torregrosa's classmate Lisa Rutledge tallied the match's lone double-double for the blue team with 13 kills and 11 digs, while hitting at a .440 clip. Blue setter Laurie Gardner dished out a match-high 43 assists to go along with her four kills, three aces and nine digs.
The highly touted freshmen also turned in fine performances in their first organized match. Middle blocker Bre Ladd finished with seven kills and six total blocks in four games for the blue team, while Kim Glass chipped in with 11 kills, seven digs and a match-high nine total blocks for both the blue and white teams.
Freshman outside hitter Jennifer Abernathy added nine kills and 10 digs in her first outing in an Arizona uniform.
The intrasquad match was the final tune up for the Wildcats before they open the season next week against UT-Arlington at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky. The team will have Sunday and Monday off, practice on Tuesday and Wednesday before leaving for Kentucky on Thursday.
