TUCSON, Ariz. ?- University of Arizona gymnast Monica Bisordi was named 2005 South Central Region Co-Gymnast of the Year, it was announced last Saturday.
Bisordi was one of three gymnasts to share the honor, including Rachelle Simpson of Nebraska and Jackie Jaworowicz from Illinois-Chicago. It is the first such honor for Bisordi, who garnered second team All-America accolades on the floor a year ago.
Bisordi, a 5-foot-1 senior from San Mateo, Calif., became the program’s all-time leading scorer this season. With 2,120.790 points scored, she is the only gymnast to break the 2,000-point barrier. She competed all-around in all 13 meets this season and made 51 all-around appearances in her career.
On the season, Bisordi captured 14 individual titles, including one vault, one bars, six beam, two floor and four all-around titles. Additionally she placed in the Top 5 in various events 40 times. She was named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team as an all-arounder, and was named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week for Feb. 14-21.
The No. 18 Arizona Wildcats concluded their 2005 season with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships last Saturday. The Wildcats finished the season with a 24-11 record. It was their 19th-straight NCAA Regional appearance.
