Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach Joan Bonvicini: “I expect a lot more effort, intensity and pride than we showed tonight. I thought a couple people played hard for us. Natalie [Jones] didn’t shoot well, but she played hard. I thought Ashley [Whisonant] and Jessica [Arnold] played hard, as well, but overall I am disappointed.”

“At the end of the first half, I thought that was the worst half we’ve played all year. Things just weren’t in sync for us. We weren’t playing good post defense, not rebounding.”

“I don’t know why we didn’t play well. I expect more mental toughness and grit out of our team.  We’ve had a lot of adversity this year, and I’ve never made excuses. I just expect more out of the team, and rightly so.”

“We had too many turnovers in the first half and were very hesitant on offense, which affected us defensively, as well. Cal scored on the inside, in transition, just in every way possible.”

“I’m more disappointed than angry.  I expect more.”

“We didn’t play with fire tonight.  We’ll get that back for Saturday.  Tomorrow will be a tough practice.”

“We will play better on Saturday.”

Senior guard Natalie Jones: “I think we got exposed underneath. (Devanei) Hampton and (Ashley) Walker were constantly put inside and that opened up their outside game. Last time we contained their post players. This game we had mismatches. They took advantage of that and put the ball inside.”

“I was frustrated because I couldn’t get anything to go in. Even when we forced them to go outside, they made their shots.”

“I’ve never had a game where I could get nothing to fall. They were all in and then out. I started to wonder what else could go wrong.”

“I would have rather had a win going into Stanford. They are probably the smartest team in the Pac-10. We have to quickly put this game behind us.”

“It’s difficult. I can’t tell my teammates what to do. You can tell them to get pumped up, but it’s something you have to do personally once you stop on to the court.”

Sophomore guard Jessica Arnold: “I am feeling a little out of shape. I did get almost a full week of practice in, so that was nice.”

“We all just felt frustrated tonight. It was hard to watch.”

“Cal deserves credit. They played great. We just couldn’t respond.”

California Head Coach Joanne Boyle: “It was a good game for us. We’ve been playing up and down. This is our last road trip and we know the importance of each and every game. The kids have bought into one game at a time.”
