TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona Baseball team notched its first hit of the season today at Hi Corbett Field as hundreds of Wildcat fans turned out at the historic ballpark to select their seats for the upcoming 2012 season on a gorgeous and sun-filled day.
Stunning weather, free parking and admission and even free food greeted the Wildcat fans eager to pick out their very own seats for the entire season, which will include 35 home games. Arizona Athletics staff, including Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, Head Coach Andy Lopez and members of the UA team, welcomed fans at the gate and showed off their new digs.
"We had an outstanding turnout," Byrne said of the event. "I want to thank all of our fans who came out today. Any time we have an opportunity to come out to speak with our fans and shake their hands in a facility like this, we're going to do so. We're extremely excited about the upcoming season and the future of our program, and today showed we have outstanding support from the community."
The school hosted an exclusive hour-and-half window for season ticket holders and Wildcat Club members to get the first choice of seats beginning at 9 a.m. By 10:30 a.m., gates opened to the general public where families and kids got their first glimpse of the revamped stadium. Some even took the opportunity to run the bases on the field.
"It's a real joy to get to meet our fans and talk to them face-to-face," Lopez said. "From a coaching standpoint, I'm thrilled to call this place our home now. I think from seeing the reaction of all the people that came out today that it's a great opportunity for the fans. I think this is a win-win situation for us as a program and a community to create something special here."
By the time the day's festivities ended in the early afternoon, ticket-takers had increased season ticket sales by almost 250-percent from recent seasons. Nearly 500 season tickets are accounted for with more than a month to go before the season opener. Season tickets will continue to be on sale at www.arizonawildcats.com and through the McKale Ticket Office (520-621-2287) leading up to the season.
