Fox drops his match in 21 holes

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Both University of Arizona men’s golfers lost matches Wednesday at the 2006 United States Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Ben Fox, sophomore from Studio City, Calif., lost to Ryan Posey of Dallas, Texas, 1-up in 21 holes.  Fox was 3-down through 14 holes, but rallied to square the match by winning holes 15, 16 and 17.  Posey won the match with a par-5 on the 21st hole.

Josh Esler, a senior from Wauconda, Ill., was defeated by Mark Strickland of Woodstock, Ga., 3 and 1.  Strickland took the lead with a par-4 on the second hole and never trailed.  Esler won just three holes on the day.

Fox and Esler both easily qualified for the match play portion of the event, tying for 25th and 37th, respectively, after 36 holes of stroke play.

The duo was half of Arizona’s school-record four qualifiers in the event.  The 106th U.S. Amateur Championship continues through Sunday.
