TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's basketball team opened the 2002-03 season with its annual Pepsi Red-Blue Scrimmage Wednesday in McKale Center before a crowd of 8,860. The Red team defeated the Blue team, 105-87.

After ending the first half trailing 47-43, the Red team came back in the second to trounce the Blue. Led by senior Jason Gardner, who scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half, the Red team outscored the Blue 62-40 to earn the 18-point win. Gardner led the Red team with 23 points, shooting 8-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc to go with a game-high 14 assists. Senior forward Rick Anderson also contributed 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while shooting 9 of 13 from the field.

"We are still getting used to each other," Gardner said. "It will be different when we finally get out there and play another team. Coach Olson will get everyone more playing time, and it will just be a matter of putting the guys on the court to get the job done when we open the season against Western Kentucky."

For the Blue team, senior forward Luke Walton scored a team-high 23 points, and added 10 rebounds and six assists. Freshman Hassan Adams tallied 22 points, and sophomore Isaiah Fox scored 16 points and pulled down 11 boards for the Blue team. The Blue team out-rebounded the Red team 44-30, but had double the turnovers with 22.

Six Wildcats scored more than 20 points, and nine players scored in the double figures. Arizona's freshmen also had a good night, totaling 74 points and 15 rebounds.

"The Red team ran the Blue team off the court in the second half," head coach Lute Olson said. "Like I said, this was a dress rehearsal. There were ten guys on the floor tonight, but when we play next Tuesday there will only be five."

Arizona will next be in action on Tuesday, Nov. 12, as the team hosts the EA Sports All-Stars. Tip-off in McKale Center is scheduled for 8 p.m. MST.
