TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's basketball program learned Monday that freshman Chris Rodgers will be immediately eligible to compete for the Wildcats.

Rodgers, a 6-foot-3, 203-pound, guard from Portland, Ore., was ruled eligible by the NCAA to compete beginning with the 2002-03 season. Arizona had appealed on Rodgers' behalf to be fully qualified and his initial eligibility was approved.

"We're pleased with the NCAA's ruling," said Arizona head coach Lute Olson. "With Chris' initial eligibility approved, we can now move forward with preparations for the upcoming season."

An all-state performer from Woodrow Wilson High School, Rodgers averaged a state-best 26.6 points and 5.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.4 steals last year as a senior and earned Portland Interscholastic League Player-of-the-Year honors. He joins a Wildcat roster that returns 10 letterwinners from last season's 24-10 club that won the Pacific-10 Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's "Sweet Sixteen."

Arizona opens the 2002-03 campaign in Tucson against Western Kentucky on Sat., Nov. 23.
