La Jolla, Calif. ?- The Arizona men’s tennis team began play today, Friday, Mar. 4, in La Jolla, Calif., at the 116th Pacific Coast Doubles tournament. After a delayed start, due to inclement weather, Arizona completed two matches before rain postponed play until tomorrow morning. Since this is an “open” tournament, results from these matches will not count against individual records.

The Wildcats entered three teams into the tournament this weekend, with one pair receiving a first round bye. Beginning the day, junior Daniel Andrus and freshman Bruno Alcala defeated Dave Ryan and Jonathan Wong, of Stanford University, 7-6, 6-2. Before the rains hit, junior Tim Mullane and freshman Claudio Christen fell to Samuel Gibbs and Andy Sinn, of Fresno State, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Senior Colin O'Grady and junior Roger Matalonga received a first round bye and will compete tomorrow morning.

Baring any more inclement weather, action is set to continue tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 5, at 8 a.m. O’Grady and Matalonga are set to face Scott Kintz and Scott Lippitt from California. Tomorrow, Andrus and Alcala will compete against fellow Pac-10 players, Johan Berg and Dejan Cuetkovic of the University of Southern California. In the consolation bracket, Mullane and Christen will compete against opponents TBA.
