Match 14: No. 36 Arizona (10-2) vs. No. 32 Stanford (4-5)

?

Date: ?Friday, March 7, 2008

?

Time: ?1:30 p.m. MST

?

Location: ?LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, Tucson, Ariz.

?

?

Match Data: ?Arizona hosts the Stanford Cardinal on Friday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.?

?

The Rankings: ??Arizona jumped 12 spots in the latest ITA collegiate rankings on Tuesday. The Cats are currently No. 36.? Individually, Claudio Christen is at No. 108 and Jay Goldman and Christen are slotted at No. 48 for doubles duos.

?

Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitzˇ? will begin his third season at the helm for the Wildcats . He currently has a record of 27-28.? Berkowitz joined the program in 2004?and has held numerous national and collegiate coaching positions. He was promoted to the head coaching position in the spring of 2005 after serving as hall-of-famer Bill Wright's assistant.? Berkowitz, 33, was a top collegiate player for the universities of Kentucky and New Mexico, respectively.? Berkowitz began his coaching career in 1999?as an assistant coach at Alabama for three seasons. In his final year he helped the Crimson Tide earn a No. 18 national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Championships.? He is assisted by Tom Lloyd, who is in his second year in that capacity.

?

Scouting the Cardinal: ?From the looks of Stanfordˇ?s record, one wouldnˇ?t consider them to be a formidable foe. But what their record doesnˇ?t show is that all five of their defeats have come against the nationˇ?s top 15. Individually they are led by No. 2 ranked Alex Clayton and No. 76 Matt Burch.

?

The Series with Stanford: ?Since 1960, the series between the two schools has been a little one-sided. Stanford has a 58-2 lead over the Cats.

?

Last Time Out: ?Arizona beat two non-conference opponents last time out on the courts. On Friday they defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions 7-0 and on Saturday they beat Brigham Young 5-2. Leading the Cats was Jay Goldman who went undefeated in all of his singles and doubles matches

?

Hot Start: ?The?Cats are off to their best start at 10-2 dating back to the 1999-00.? Likewise, it is Coach Berkowitzˇ?s best start during his tenure as head coach. His overall record now stands at 27-28.

?

High Rank: ?The Cats current ranking of No. 36 by the collegiate ITA is the highest ranking for the team during Coach Berkowitzˇ?s three years at Arizona. The next rankings are due out on March 11.

?

Doubles Action: ?Before Saturdayˇ?s match vs. Brigham Young, Arizona had only lost the doubles point one other timeˇ?against USC. But unlike their battle against the Trojans, the Cats were able to persevere against BYU and take five of the next six singles matches and win the match 5-2.

?

Gametime Goldman: ?Freshman Jay Goldman is beginning to show why he was such a touted young player coming out of high school. Goldman went unbeaten this past weekend vs. LMU and BYU. He was also the runner-up for the Pac-10 player of the week honors.

?

Zim Train: ?Peter Zimmer got back to his winning ways this weekend after suffering some defeats against ranked opponents earlier in the season. On Friday he beat LMUˇ?s Renzo Maggi 6-3, 6-1 and knocked off BYUˇ?s Daniel Hwang 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday.

?

Home Court Advantage: ?Arizona is unbeaten this season while playing at home. They currently are 7-0 while playing at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center and 2-0 when at the Tucson Racquet Club.

?

Some New (Volunteer) Coaching Help: ?This year Arizona is pleased to have ATP all-pro Taylor Dent as a volunteer assistant coach throughout the season.? Dent, who was ranked as the No. 21 player in the world on August 8th 2005, suffered a back injury which caused him to miss most of the past seasons. After having successful surgery, Dent was contacted by good friend and former coach Tom Lloyd, now an assistant with Arizona, who extended the coaching invitation.? Dent, while working on rehabbing his back, will coach the Wildcats on specific and individual techniques. Dent is known as an aggressive serve-and-volleyer with one of the biggest serves on the tour, tying Andy Roddick for the record of fastest serve at 155 mph.

?

Returnees: ?The Cats senior leaders have been the rock of the team so far. Claudio Christen, ranked No. 108 in singles and No. 48 in doubles by the ITA rankings released on Tuesday, has a record of 10-2 in doubles. Bruno Alcala has a record of 7-2 in singles.??

?

New Faces in the Crowd: ?Half way into the year, Arizonaˇ?s so-called ˇ?newbiesˇ± have played a significant role to the teamˇ?s success.? Freshman Andres Carrasco has fluctuated between the No. 2 and 3 positions while posting a record of 8-3 in singles. Also their newcomer from down under, sophomore Pat Metham, has a record of 8-1.

?

?

Fall Season: ?The Cats participated in five fall tournaments during the fall semester...In the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, Claudio Christen and Bruno Alcala were able to win the doubles championshipˇ?At the Aggie Fall Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Ravid Hazi advanced to the finals before falling to champion Jim Brouleau of New Mexico Stateˇ?Christen competed in the prestigious Polo All American Championship in Tulsa, OK and won four matches before finally falling to No. 17 Adam Holmstrom of Denverˇ?Peter Zimmer competed in three fall events and posted a record of 5-3.
