FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - Relief pitcher Mark Melancon retired the side with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve Arizona's 6-5 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night.
The Wildcats (39-19) need one victory to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Titans, the defending NCAA champions, must win twice Sunday to avoid elimination from the double-elimination tournament.
Arizona held a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth when Fullerton's Jon Wilhite hit a two-run double. Melancon then walked Blake Davis intentionally to load the bases with nobody out.
Melancon struck out Justin Turner, made Sergio Pedroza fly out and got Brett Pill to hit into a fielder's choice to earn his school-record 11th save and preserve the victory for Kevin Guyette (10-4).
Fullerton left 17 runners on base, 12 in scoring position.
The Titans (42-15) held a 1-0 lead when the Wildcats scored three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. Nick Hundley hit a solo home run in the fifth and Jordan Brown added a three-run homer in the sixth.
Fullerton left-hander Ricky Romero (12-5) suffered his first loss since April 20.
