TUCSON, Ariz. - With a plethora of Arizona swimming and diving news in the headlines lately, we thought it best to keep you up-to-date on the scoops and what to watch for concerning Coach Busch's program. Let start with Justine Schluntz...
NCAA Woman of the Year Finalist
As most are already aware, UA former swimmer Justine Schluntz is quite the acclaimed student-athlete. Currently studying in Oxford, England as a Rhodes Scholar, Schluntz was named on Friday as one of nine finalists for the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year award. The field was whittled down from 452 applicants to 30 honorees and now stands at just nine finalists.
The Albuquerque, N.M. native, was CoSIDA's Academic All-American of the Year across the entire University division, is a five-time NCAA champion and 16-time All-American. The nine finalists are three athletes each from division one, two and three. Arizona has won the NCAA WOTY two out of the last three years with swimmers Whitney Myers and Lacey Nymyeyer winning in 2007 and 209, respectively.
Schluntz will be in attendance on Oct. 17 at the NCAA Woman of the Year ceremony in Indianapolis for the announcement. Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, Head Coach Busch and Schluntz's family are scheduled to be in attendance as well.
USA Swimming Releases 2010-11 National Team Roster
USA Swimming released its annual team roster for funding on Tuesday and the UA program had four representatives on the current team. On the women's side, Annie Chandler and Amanda Beard both made the team, swimming breaststroke events. Beard is currently trying for a run at her fifth Olympic Games in 2012.
Other Busch-coached, Ford Aquatics memebers on the national roster include Olympians Matt Grevers, Christine Magnuson and Michael Alexandrov.
2010 Commonwealth Games Begin Sunday
The Commonwealth Games, taking place this year in New Delhi, India, will hold its opening ceremonies on Sunday, Oct. 3 with events to begin Monday, the 4th. Arizona will have four representatives swimming in the Games with South African swimmers Jean Basson, Roland Schoeman and Darian Townsend joining Great Britain's Simon Burnett.
Look for Basson to contend for a top-eight showing in the mid-distance freestyle events, while countryman Townsend will be showcased in the individual medleys. Both Schoeman and Burnett are entered into the sprint freestyle competitions.
Dual Meet Season Almost Here
And last but certainly not least, UA's swimming and diving dual meet schedule is set to get under way Oct. 15 when Arizona hosts Arizona State, Kansas and UNLV for a relay meet. Then, on Saturday, the 16th, the teams will compete in typical fall-season events. The Wildcats have many new faces on both the men's and women's rosters for the 2010-11 year
