TUCSON--Lindsay Wood's two-out grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Northern Iowa a 9-7 victory over Cal State Northridge in Arizona's Worth Wildcat Invitational softball tournament Friday.
UNI had stranded eight runners until the seventh, when it batted around. Melissa Larson had a two-run single earlier in the eight-run rally.
The Matadors scored an unearned run in the first to open the scoring. Amber Copelan doubled, and with two outs scored when leftfielder Tanya Miller dropped Christen Bedwell's fly ball
Northridge added two more in the top of the fourth with Summer Richardson's two-run homer to center, and two more on an RBI double by Joey Metz and a run-scoring grounder by Lindsay Sheehan in the fifth.
Northern Iowa got its run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1 when Erin Strellner reached on an error and scored on Claudia Sandoval's double to left. Tanya Miller walked but CSN reliever Kia Fennel got a flyout to end the inning.
RBI doubles by Copelan and Christen Bedwell pushed the lead to 7-1. Richardson came in as a reliever with the bases loaded and got two outs before giving up the big hit to Wood.
