AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 3 University of Arizona women's swimming and diving team came back from an eight point deficit after the second session to defeat the No. 10 Longhorns of Texas by 19 points, 195.50-176.50. The No. 6 Wildcat men were not as fortunate as they fell to No. 1 Texas 247-123 and to No. 4 Texas A&M 228-143. The event took place at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
Sophomore Amanda Beard placed first in three events, the 400 IM (4:19.93), the 100 breast (1:03.07) and the 200 breast (2:14.23). In all three events Beard made NCAA consideration times. Sophomore Beth Botsford captured first in two different events, the 100 back (55.33) and the 200 back (1:58.59). Junior Sarah Tolar touched the wall first in the 200 free with the time of 1:47.16. In the 1650 junior Caroline Kilian earned first place swimming to the time of 16:45.29.
In the women's 400 free relay Arizona placed second with the time of 3:25.91. The team
consisted of junior Jenny Vanker, Tolar, freshman Kristen Brennan and senior Lindsey
On the women's three meter freshman Claire Febvay scored 265.80 points to place second. On the platform Arizona grabbed the top three positions, Febvay (403.70), senior Lindsay Berryman (391.40) and senior Adrian David (387.15).
Senior Tyler Painter captured first place in the men's 1650 swimming to the time of 15:09.98. Sophomore Jeff Dash placed second in the 200 fly with the time of 1:47.86 and junior Roland Schoeman placed second in the 100 free (44.61). Senior Jay Schryver came in third in the 200 free with the time of 1:39.41, while junior Kris Souther reached the wall in the time of 1:50.09 to place third in the 200 back. Freshman Greg Owen recorded a 2:04.12 in the 200 breast to finish third.
The Cat's men's 400 free relay team came in second place (3:01.38), the team was made up of Schoeman, freshman Eric la Fleur, Schryver and senior Scott Gaskins.
In men's diving senior Omar Ojeda placed second on the one meter (348.55) and third on the platform (505.05).
The Wildcat's next host the Arizona State Sun Devils on February 10, 2001 on the University of Arizona Campus at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. MST.
