ANN ARBOR, Mich. ?- Arizona’s women’s tennis team suffered two losses in the first round of 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Ann Arbor, Mich. Seniors Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar lost their first round doubles match, as did Hollands in her singles match.
Arizona’s top-ranked doubles pair, seeded fourth in the tournament, lost to Michigan’s Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata, 8-1. DaCosta and Delicata, playing on their home court, dropped Hollands and Mlakar’s record to 2-3 with the match. In their two previous tournaments, Hollands and Mlakar had won their first matches of each tournament, before losing in the following round.
Hollands and Mlakar defaulted their consolation match to William and Mary’s Megan Muth and Amy Wei, due to an injury Mlakar suffered during the first-round match. Mlakar will return to Arizona for diagnosis.
Hollands, ranked No. 7 in the nation and a 5-8 seed in the tournament, then played DaCosta on the singles’ court, losing 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5). Hollands will now play Harvard’s Susanna Lingman in the consolation bracket’s first round.
Junior Stephanie Balzert, freshman Camelia Todorova, and sophomore Kasia Jakowlew will begin play at the Palm Desert Classic tomorrow, Nov. 5, in Palm Springs, Calif.
