Tucson, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team (8-2-0, 0-0-0) faced No. 25 Pepperdine (7-2-1) at home tonight and suffered its second loss of the season, 1-0.

Both Arizona and Pepperdine had opportunities in the first half but neither team was able to register a goal. The Wildcat offense had seven shots in the first period, while the Wave offense had 5. Arizona’s freshman goalkeeper McCall Smith and Pepperdine’s junior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli each had three saves to leave the game scoreless at the half.

Pepperdine’s Jenna Fodor broke the scoreless tie at 51:40 with a goal off of an assist from Jenna Ainsworth. Fodor placed a ball from 18 yards out in the center of the field to give the Waves the 1-0 lead. Smith had six saves in the second half to keep the game close, but the Wildcats were unable to score. Miller had the most opportunities for the Cats with three shots, including one on goal.

Wildcat Head Coach Dan Tobias felt the Wildcats had their chances in the first half.

“I thought we created four high quality chances inside the box in the first half,” Tobias said. “The difference in the game was not finishing those opportunities.”

With five seniors and seven juniors, Pepperdine has experience throughout its lineup.

“Pepperdine is a good team that is experienced,” Tobias said. “They are a well-coached team. We are less experienced than them. We are getting more experienced throughout the season and I feel like we played good enough to win tonight.”

The attendance at tonight’s game was over 700 for the third time this season.

“We feel like we are building the program here,” he said. “We are building on the field and in the classroom. We are excited that the community is coming to support us. We like to give them a reason to come.”

Arizona will next take on Colorado College at home on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. The match will take place at the Wildcats’ home facility, Murphey Stadium, which is located at 15th St. and Plumer Ave. Admission is free.
