UA Soccer notches first win of the season

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Sophomore Renae Cuellar led the Wildcats to their first win of the season, scoring both Arizona goals in a 2-1 win over Old Dominion Sunday.

The Wildcats, now 1-3-1, defeated Old Dominion University (2-3-1) on the final day of the Sun Devil Desert Classic.

Cuellar scored her first goal and second of the season in the 11th minute, on a rebound off of a saved shot by senior Jasmine Namdar. Cuellar's scored her second goal in the 23rd minute, off another assist from Namdar.

Old Dominion's only goal came in the game's 50th minute, scored by Ashley Kukrua and assisted by Ashlee Coutu and Lisa Bernardini.

"I'm very happy with today's overall effort." Said head coach Dan Tobias, "We played a solid first half, with Renae scoring our two goals in the beginning of the first half. This was definitely a great way for us to end the tournament, and a positive step for us for the rest of the season."

Cuellar, along with freshman Karli Hedlund and senior Samantha Drees were named to the Sun Desert Classic All-Tournament Team.

Up next, the Wildcats return home to take on Brown on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Wildcats will go up against Rutgers at 1:30 p.m.
