TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's basketball player Mark Lyons has been named to the 2012-13 Naismith Trophy early season watch list, announced today by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on performance from the previous year and expectations for 2012-13, are under consideration for college basketball's player-of-the-year award. Lyons is one of three Pac-12 Conference players on the list.

A 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior guard from Schenectady, N.Y., Lyons averaged 15.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game to go with 58 treys last year for Xavier University. He scored in double figures 29 times in 34 appearances, and had seven 20-point games to his credit.

After graduating from Xavier last summer, Lyons transferred to Arizona and was immediately eligible to play this season. He tallied 17 points, six assists and zero turnovers in 30 minutes of action in Arizona's season-opening win on Nov. 11.

In February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will compile a midseason team of the nation's top-30 players. Then in March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will narrow the list to four finalists. The Naismith Men's College Player of the Year presented by AT&T will be awarded on April 7, 2013, in Atlanta, the site of this season's NCAA Final Four.

The Naismith Trophy has been presented annually since 1969.

The 12th-ranked Wildcats will next be in action on Thursday, Nov. 15, vs. UTEP in McKale Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. MST and will be televised by FOX Sports Net.
