SARASOTA, Fla. - The University of Arizona men's tennis player Andres Carrasco's outstanding run in the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic came to an end today, wrapping up the team's fall schedule. The senior fell in a tough battle in the finals of singles competition in front of about 500 fans.
"Andy left it all on the court today," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "Even though he lost in the final I am very proud of him. He had a great tournament."
Carrasco took to the courts and faced No. 111 ranked Sekou Bangoura Jr. of Florida, the fourth ranked opponent he has faced in the tournament. The senior fell in the first set 6-4, bounced back in the second set to capture the 6-4 win, but Bangoura turned it around in the third set in his favor, topping Carrasco 6-1 to clinch the title.
The Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain native began his outstanding run in the tournament on Friday when he faced Kurt Mauro of Temple in the first round of competition where he swept in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the second round. The senior then faced No. 96 ranked Carl Sunberg of Miami in a close match where Carrasco edged out Sunberg in a close 7-5 first set victory and then notched a 6-2 second set win to advance to the Quarterfinals.
On Saturday in the Quarterfinals, Carrasco breezed past Florida's No. 105 ranked Bob VanOverbeek, winning by default. In his second match of the day in the Semifinals, the Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain native battled No. 113 ranked Finn Tearney of Pepperdine in a three-setter. Carrasco clinched the first set 6-3, fell 4-6 in the second set, before edging out Tearney 7-5 in the third set to advance to the finals.
Carrasco finished with a 4-1 record at the tournament and an overall 5-4 singles fall season record.
The Wildcats will open the 2011 season at home on Jan. 21 against UC Riverside at 1 p.m. MST.
