TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team was one of 27 squads selected to participate in the 2002 NCAA West Regional, it was announced Monday by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. It is the 14th consecutive regional appearance for the Wildcat men's golf program.

Arizona, who enters the regional as the No. 9 seed, is one of 27 teams and six individuals scheduled to compete at The Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M., a par 72, 7,253-yard layout. The 54-hole, three-day event runs May 16-18 and is hosted by the University of New Mexico.

The 27-team field is comprised of the following teams (seed): USC (1), Texas (2), Minnesota (3), Fresno State (4), Washington (5), New Mexico (6), Pepperdine (7), San Diego State (8), Arizona (9), Nevada-Reno (10), Oregon (11), Ohio State (12), UCLA (13), Washington State (14), UC-Irvine (15), Pacific (16), UNLV (17), Stanford (18), Arizona State (19), Texas Tech (20), California (21), Brigham Young (22), Colorado State (23), Illinois State (24), Detroit-Mercy (25), IUPUI (26), and Central Connecticut State (27). Nine Pacific-10 Conference teams qualified for NCAA Regional competition, the most of any conference in the nation.

Albuquerque's Championship Course was the site of Arizona's 1992 men's golf national championship. Earlier this season, Arizona finished third as a team at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, which was also played at The Championship Course.

The top 10 teams and two individuals will advance to the 2002 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, May 29-June 1, at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Arizona has won the West Regional five times (1989, '91, '92, '93, 2000) and finished second in last year's competition.

The Wildcats seek its 20th overall, and 16th consecutive, appearance in the NCAA Championships.
