FORT HUACHUCA--The UA football team practiced Friday morning and then braced for a different set of challenges in the afternoon, with offensive and defensive units slated for sessions in a couple of the Fort's training centers.
Defensive and special teams players were headed to the LRC -- Leadership Reaction Course, while offensive units were off to the indoor EST -- Engagement Skills Training with weapons simulation.
Both are part of the regimen of tactics used here to test a solder's ability to think and react, either with formulated plans (LRC obstacle tests) or using quick assessment skills. Both strategies work pretty well in football, too, and head coach Mike Stoops and staff enjoy the comparisons, one reason for the trip here.
The team practiced in the morning and otherwise had the break from football for the rest of the day.
Quick Take: Mike Stoops after Friday's practice
CAMP NOTES... Maj. Gen. John Custer came to the morning practice to talk to Stoops and was to address the team at dinner Friday night. He has spent 36 years in the U.S. Army and retires next month... Quarterback Nick Foles spent 20 minutes playing catch with young Austin Faulkner and talking to his dad, Col. Timothy Faulkner, after practice Thursday night. Faulkner is the Garrison Commander. .. Tucson reporters who follow the Wildcats must be escorted on and off the post by public affairs specialist Tanja Linton each day because of post rules for access by the media... Wide receiver Juron Criner remained in Tucson for the Cats' five planned practices down here after suffering a concussion in a scrimmage in Tucson earlier in the week. Trainer Randy Cohen said it's a precautionary move and one taken because "it helps to rest in your own bed"... Foles was sidelined for some of the recent drills after a minor groin pull, while tackle Vaughn Dotsy has been limited because of his winter back surgery and H-Back Taimi Tutogi has been in a boot during the Huachuca portion after spraining an ankle in the Tucson scrimmage... A couple of interceptions by Joseph Perkins and Robert Golden in a blitz period -- the same period that drew Stoops' ire over defensive efforts Thursday night -- seemed to buoy the head coach in Friday's practice... The team splits into two for some periods in practice, to give more players more repetitions...
