TUCSON--Senior pitcher Taryne Mowatt spun a two-hit shutout to help lead Arizona to 6-0 victory over visiting Creighton in a single game to open the Wildcat Invitational tournament Thursday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Mowatt struck out 11 and improved her record to 6-3. UA climbed to 12-4 and Creighton dropped to 12-7.
Jessi Jadlowski led off the top of the first with a single to center, but Mowatt struck out the next three batters to get her evening started.
Brittany Lastrapes and K'Lee Arredondo led off UA's half with singles to put two aboard with no outs. Lastrapes later scored on an infield single by Jenae Leles to give UA a 1-0 lead.
Arizona picked up three runs in the third, all unearned due to four Creighton errors. Cyndi Duran and Arredondo reached on errors, and Duran scored when Arredondo stole second and the catcher threw the ball into center field. Leles picked up another RBI, driving in Arredondo, and Leles scored on a throwing error off Stacie Chambers' grounder.
The Bluejays got a walk by T.J. Eadus and a hit by Renee Sinkler in the fourth, but Mowatt got Michelle Graner to hit into a 5-3 double play to Leles at third.
Amanda Hess came on in relief of starter Tara Oltman (7-4) in the fourth and retired the side in order, but in the next frame Lastrapes led off with a standup triple off the base of the fence in left center. Hess struck out Arredondo, but threw a wild pitch to Sam Banister that allowed Lastrapes to score and make it 5-0.
Banister walked, but CU got its second line-out double play of the night, this one by shortstop Jess Stigge, to stop the rally.
Callista Balko hit a one-out solo home run to left in the UA sixth to make it 6-0.
