FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team defeated Northern Arizona, 2-0, in an exhibition game in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The Wildcats and the Lumberjacks played a scoreless first half with neither team placing a shot on goal.
Arizona put the first score on the board at 50:52 in the second half when sophomore Kaity Heath crossed the ball into the box and senior Mallory Miller received the cross with a diving header into the goal. The second goal for the Wildcats came later in the half at 81:03 when senior Jennifer Klein placed the ball between two defenders to give freshman London King an open shot resulting in a goal.
All three Wildcat goalies saw time with sophomore goalie McCall Smith starting the game and freshmen Chelsea McIntyre and Devon Wharf seeing action in later minutes.
Head Coach Dan Tobias was pleased with the Wildcats effort in their preseason match and the four days of training camp in Flagstaff leading up to the game.
“For us we had a great four days up here,” Tobias said. “Having a friendly match up here gave us a lot of great information. We have a better feel for where we are as a team. We saw some good things today. We were able to keep the ball well. Our defense was consistently organized and were able to keep the ball out of the net.”
The Wildcats will return home to take on Missouri in their first regular season match.
“We’re ready to come back home for a week of training,” Tobias said. “We will be prepared for the season opener against a well coached team in Missouri. We are pleased with what we have seen so far in the preseason.”
The match against Missouri will take place on Aug. 26. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Murphey Soccer Complex.
