UA Cross Country Surprises Field at ASU Invitational

GILBERT, Ariz. - The UA men's and women's cross country teams took the field at the ASU Invitational by storm Friday afternoon. The Arizona men finished a surprising second behind the No. 1-ranked Stanford Cardinal. The team scored 44 points to finish ahead of the No. 23-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, who finished third. The Wildcat women finished fourth with 112 points and finished ahead of the No. 17 Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, who finished sixth.

The men's team was led by junior Mark Anderson, who placed second just three seconds off of the lead. Anderson completed the 8,000-meter race in 24 minutes, 17 seconds, his fastest 8,000m time this season. The second Wildcat finisher was sophomore Josh Ludwig in ninth place. Ludwig finished with a time of 24:50. He was followed by junior Wade Juntunen (18th, 25:29) and junior Eric Bohn (19th, 25:30). The final scoring Wildcat was junior Craig Pansing, who finished 22nd in 25:49. Redshirt freshman Aaron Powell finished the race in 26:04 to claim 25th place. True-freshmen Ryan Irwin and Al Eder finished 41st and 42nd, respectively. Irwin crossed the line at 27:08, while Eder clocked a 27:10 on the course.

Freshman Adrienne Goeller led the UA women, finishing 15th on the 5,000-meter course in 18:55. Goeller was followed by redshirt freshman Michi Hirakawa-Wong. She finished the race in 19:37 to claim 25th place. The third Wildcat to cross the line was redshirt freshman Susan Mortensen with a time of 19:47 in 29th place. Redshirt freshman Robin Tierney followed Mortensen in 31st place and a time of 19:55. Close behind Tierney was another Wildcat freshman, Jennifer Ford. Ford finished 32nd in 20:00.

The Wildcats will try to take the momentum they gained against these ranked teams into next weekend's NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, October 19.
