MIDLAND, Texas ?- The Arizona men’s tennis team completed play at the Midland Tennis Classic in Midland, Texas. Weather for the day became a huge factor for both Wildcat competitors, as the starting temperature for the match was 46 degrees with winds gusting in the mid-teens.
In singles competition, the Wildcats went 1-1. In his first match of the day, Paul Warkentin defeated Ben Harknett of Rice University 7-6, 6-4. However, during the second set, diving for a ball, Warkentin pulled a muscle in his back, which further hampered his play. Warkentin was able to finish the match but had to withdraw from competition for the rest of the tournament.
“I was playing really good, hitting the ball well, but when I dove for the ball my back just went out,” Warkentin said following his match.
On an adjacent court, Colin O’Grady fell to Barry McLaren of Baylor University, 6-3, 6-4.
The Wildcats will begin action at the Roley West Regional Thursday, Oct. 21 in Malibu, Calif.
