Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez today name Rod Smith co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and officially appointed Mike Parrish as director of football operations.

The appointments give UA's new staff five coaches -- Rodriguez, Smith, Calvin Magee, Tony Dews and Tony Gibson. All but Gibson are on the offensive side.

Smith played under Rodriguez at Glenville State and worked for him at West Virginia and Michigan. He will begin work next week.

Parrish served as Rodriguez' director of operations at Michigan in 2010 and was an operations assistant in Ann Arbor for the first two years of Rodriguez' tenure.

Smith, 38, coached quarterbacks under Rodriguez at Michigan from 2008 to 2010 and one season under Rodriguez at West Virginia in 2007. He helped develop two of the most explosive signal callers in Rodriguez' offensive system, WVU's Pat White and Michigan's Denard Robinson.

Smith was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at South Florida in 2005 and 2006 after starting on the staff there as pass game coordinator and QBs coach in 2001.

He played under Rodriguez as a quarterback at Glenville State from 1993-96, where he earned his degree in 1997. He helped GSU win four consecutive conference titles and reach the national playoffs twice and was an All-American and team captain his senior year.

He began his coaching career as offensive coordinator at Franklin High School in West Virginia (1997), offensive coordinator at Urbana University (1998-99) and offensive coordinator at West Virginia Tech (2000). He also committed time as a graduate assistant at Clemson in 2001 working with offensive coordinator Rodriguez and relocated with Rodriguez as a graduate assistant member of the coach's initial staff at WVU for a few months before taking a fulltime position at USF.

Parrish will be the staff's liaison to academic support staff, the university's admissions office for enrollment issues, the athletic department's compliance office, plus serve in directing team travel, the football calendar, recruiting processes and many other day-to-day activities for the staff.

Parrish, 28, served as Michigan's director of football operations in 2010 and was a recruiting/operations assistant for the Wolverines from 2008-09. He was an intern with Steiner Sports marketing and memorabilia agency in New Rochelle, N.Y. in 2005.

A native of Morgantown, he earned bachelor's (2006) and master's (2008) degrees from West Virginia and was active in athletic marketing and outreach activities when Rodriguez was head coach.
