LAFAYETTE, La. ?- The No. 2 Arizona softball team (26-2) defeated No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette (22-7), 10-3, at Ragin’ Cajuns Park, on Sunday.
Sophomore Caitlin Lowe led UA’s offensive attack with an inside-the-park grand slam.
Junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell threw a complete-game for her 17th win of the season, striking out 16 of the 33 Ragin’ Cajuns she faced. UA’s bats picked up its ace pitcher, who surrendered three earned runs and seven walks, both season highs.
After a scoreless first inning, UA senior Shelly Schultz had a one-out double down the left field line for Arizona’s only other extra-base hit for the game. Following a Crystal Farley strikeout, Wildcat senior Allyson Von Liechtenstein singled to short. ULL first baseman Lacey Bertucci couldn’t handle shortstop Tiffany Hebert’s throw, allowing Schultz to score the first of Arizona’s eight unearned runs on the afternoon. Following a Lowe single, Autumn Champion made it three base hits in a row for the Cats, scoring Von Liechtenstein for the game’s second run.
The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning, when Arizona batted around in an inning included three walks, a hit batsman, and an error. Incidentally, two of the three runs scored in the frame would be UA’s only earned runs in the contest.
ULL got on the board for the first time and only time in the series, when Ragin’ Cajun rightfielder Danyele Gomez belted a three-run homer to center, cutting Arizona’s lead to two runs.
The Wildcats responded in the sixth with a five-run outburst, including Lowe’s inside-the-park grand slam.
Arizona will return home to the friendly confines of Hillenbrand Stadium to open Pac-10 play next weekend. The Cats will take on Stanford at 7 p.m. Friday, before facing California’s Golden Bears Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
