TUCSON, Ariz. -- The No. 3 Arizona softball team (33-6, 7-4) downed No. 24 Arizona State (26-18, 1-11) on Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium, 10-3.

The Sun Devils struck first, as Heidi Knabe blasted a Taryne Mowatt offering over the center field wall with one on in the top of the first.

Arizona retaliated with one run in the bottom half of the first, when Caitlin Lowe tripled to lead off. With two on and nobody out, Kristie Fox singled to drive in Lowe and cut the Sun Devils’ lead to one.

The Cats struck again in the second, touching up ASU pitcher Katie Burkhart for four runs and five hits to go up, 5-2.

Leslie Wolfe relieved Mowatt in the third and inherited a pair of runners. She gave up one RBI hit and struck out three to end the inning. After a two-run third inning for the Cats, Wolfe came back out and struck out the side to end ASU’s fourth inning.

Arizona opened up its lead to six after a two-run fifth. Courtney Fossatti doubled to lead off and Lowe drew her second walk of the game. Kristie Fox drove in Fossatti for her fifth RBI of the night and Lowe came home on a Shelly Schultz single to center.

By the top of the sixth inning, every ASU batter had struck out at least once. Arizona’s first four hitters had reached base 13 of 16 times. At the end of the game, seven Wildcat hitters had multiple hits. Arizona’s pitchers fanned 14, including a season-high 10 Ks by Wolfe. Conversely, Sundevil batters struck out 14 times to Arizona’s seven.

The Cats will hit the road again next weekend to face off against Oregon on Friday and Pac-10 leader Oregon State on Saturday and Sunday.
