FULLERTON, Calif.--No. 6 Michigan's Nikki Nemetz pitched a two-hit shutout and the Wolverines got a two-run home run from Maggie Viefhau?in the sixth inning to drop No. 7 Arizona in the Cats' second game of the day at the Judi Garman Classic softball tournament here Friday.
The loss spoiled?the effects of an earlier Arizona pounding of Florida State, 13-2.
Nemetz (11-1) outdueled UA's Taryne Mowatt (9-6). Mowatt gave up five hits and one earned run, with the second reaching on an error before Viefhaus' big hit.
Arizona had a couple of runners in scoring position but could not get the key hit.?Jenae Leles ripped a wo-out double down the line in the top of the sixth, but Nemetz intentionally walked Stacie Chambers and struck Laine Roth to strand the runner, one of five left on base by?each team.
Arizona dropped to 20-7 and 2-1 in tourney play while Michigan improved to 23-3 and 2-1 in the open format,?no-playoff?tournament.
NOTES... Mowatt struck out eight and walked one... UA's other hit came from catcher Callista Balko... Roth saw her five-game hitting streak end...
NEXT UP: UA plays games against Louisiana-Lafayette and host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday to close action in Fullerton, and then returns to Tucson for a doubleheader against Marshall on Wednesday...

Two base hits and a walk loaded the bases for Stacie Chambers who slammed her seventh home run of the season, followed by a solo shot from red-hot Laine Roth. The Cats (20-6) batted through the order their first time up against Seminole starter Melissa May (2-2).
UA's Lindsey Sisk earned her 10th victory against one defeat. She ran into a jam in the bottom of the second, giving up two walks and a base hit, and then hit Monica Montez to bring in the first run for the Seminol. Noles. Jenae Leles made a diving stop of a Michelle Snyder hard grounder to save more damage as Ashley Stager plated the second run. Sisk bailed herself out with two consecutive strikeouts and a fielderˇ?s choice to end the inning with the lead at 5-2.
Sisk was able to keep the Seminoles at bay, only allowing one base runner after that two-run inning.
The long ball trend continued for the Cats in the third with one out, when Callista Balko smashed her team-leading 10th to left field with Roth on to give Arizona a 7-2 lead. The Cats tacked on two more the next inning courtesy of a Leles' one-out, two-run double double to right center to make it 9-2.
Roth singled in a run in the Arizona sixth with a bases loaded hit, reliever Terese Gober walked in another un and Sarah Akamine sliced her second hit of the game to plate two more for the final score.
Sisk struck out seven in the three-hit effort to extend her personal streak to 10 pitching victories in as many decisions.
