TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat softball team has been projected to finish third in the 2012 Pac-12 Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
The Wildcats, ranked eighth in both national preseason polls released yesterday, received one of the nine first-place votes and 48 points overall in the poll.
ASU, fresh off its nearly unanimous selection as the nation's No. 1 team in both national polls, received six first-place votes in route to receiving the poll's top slot. California, ranked No. 4/3 to start the season, received two first-ranked votes and finished second in the poll.
The top three schools enjoy a bit of separation from the bottom six, which, in order, is UCLA (19/13), Stanford (9/10), Washington (12/14), Oregon (16/11), Oregon State and newcomer Utah.
Eight of the nine Pac-12 teams will participate in the Kajikawa Classic, hosted by ASU in Tempe, where UA will open its season on Feb. 9, against McNeese State at 4:30 p.m. MT.
